In ten days #IHSTexas gets rolling! International Horn Symposium 44 is hosted by the University of North Texas College of Music, Denton, TX, and will be held May 15-19, 2012.

What is in store?

IHS44 Coming Soon: #IHSTexasThe first stop toward seeing what is going on is the website: http://music.unt.edu/ihs44/

Surf around the site for more, but in short there are interesting large concerts every night and quite a variety of events every day. Take Thursday for example. The schedule online reads,

Thursday, May 17 (Dennis Brain’s 91st Birthday)
9 am-1 pm and 2-5 pm Exhibits open – College of Music rooms
8-8:45 am Guided Warm-ups – Recital Hall, Rm. 230, Rm. 232
9:00-9:45 am Participant’s horn choir rehearsals – Recital Hall, Rm. 230, Rm. 232
10-11:30 am Lectures/Master Classes – Recital Hall, Voertman Hall, Rm. 232
11:30 am-1 pm Lunch and horn choir performances in Kerr Hall
1-2:30 pm Artist Recital – Lloyd and Scully (Winspear Hall)
3-4:30 pm Contributing Artist Recitals – Recital Hall and Voertman Hall
5-6:30 pm Symposium Banquet – UNT Gateway Center
7-7:30 pm Horn Pure (Thailand) – Winspear Hall
7:30-9 pm Symposium Orchestra Concert, Barry Tuckwell conducting
post-concert gatherings

There will be a lot to do that day and every day! That night I am bummed in a way, as I was very much looking forward to hearing Horn Pure perform that night. I heard them at IHS Australia where I wrote,

Concerts are not a contest but in a way in this type of concert at this type of event for the audience they become a bit of a contest, and in this case it actually mirrors a contest at the event. The next group threw it down and to my mind pretty much stole the show, Horn Pure from the Mahidol University College of Music in Thailand. The octet opened with Kerry Turner, Farewell to Red Castle, performed from memory with no conductor. Digest that for a moment; I don’t recall seeing such a thing from any college horn ensemble I have seen at a workshop …. They for sure raised the bar and performed this work beautifully…

More on Horn Pure here; so far as I am concerned they are must hear. They play at 7:00 — but I play third horn on the Konzertstuck on the 7:30 concert! Which I am also very much looking forward to in a great horn section with Gregory Hustis, Joseph Ognibene, and Randy Gardner. This will be a wonderful event.

And buy stuff

Horn Notes Edition won’t be there with a booth this time around (for a small publisher it is break even at best), but for sure there will be a lot of GREAT horns to try and much more! And remember, you can’t leave the sales room unless you buy something. (Just kidding).

What does it cost?

The event is very affordable, with registration at present a bit over $300 for the week or $80 a day. Money well spent, and it is unlikely that any future IHS event will be this affordable.

But what if I can only afford $10?

Social media to the rescue, this recent Facebook status from the page of the Guinness Record Horn Ensemble 2012 points out the 100% accurate fact that

Special Event Registration is only $10 for May 19th! If you cannot attend IHS for the entire week, for only $10 you’ll have access to the May 19th exhibits, presentations, concerts and a chance to be a part of horn history! Register at www.OneThousandHorns.com

Orchestra101 Coming Soon: #IHSTexasThe last day is sort of an event within an event, with a separate website (linked above) and sponsors and such, geared as an outreach to student and community hornists in the area. The venue will move to a different location on campus, but with the IHS parts of the event continuing. For example that day you can hear a session I will lead, “Orchestral Horn Playing 101 – How to Get In and Stay In the Business.” And of course everyone should be a part of the Guinness Record event; I believe they will have no trouble setting the bar really high for anyone else who might try to break the record in the future.

With the end of my semester at Arizona State I find myself working through a long list of chores in addition to getting ready for the event, so posting will certainly slow down for me on Horn Matters until the Symposium. From the Symposium I hope to have some running coverage as in past years, and above all I hope to see you there! #IHSTexas

For a bit more on what to expect see this post from James Boldin, who I look forward to seeing at the event.
